The Mitsubishi FTO was put into production in 1994, and promptly won the Japanese Sports Car of the year award in 1995. Even so, Mitsubishi for some reason decided that they would restrict the car to the Japanese home market only. They however neglected to take account of how much interest worldwide the car was attracting in other RHD countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. It wasn't long before the car was being privately imported into all these countries and over the last 13 years the car has achieved almost cult status.
In 1998 I started the Mitsubishi FTO Owners Club of Great Britain and this is now a thriving internet community organising meets all over the country every year. There are also FTO Owners Clubs now established in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Russia, and although the car is now out of production it is still tremendously popular. My own car (a 2 litre V6 tiptronic model) was purchased in 1998, and has been modestly modified over the years to include Mille Migla Spyder 17" Alloys, Carbon Fibre bonnet, stainless steel straight through exhaust system, ITG Induction air filter, grooved brake discs, Momo Millenium leather steering wheel, carbon fibre insytument panel, aluminium dial rings, piped leather interior, stainless steel kickplates and various other shiney bits.
